About Dawn

I grew up in South Tyneside in the North East of England, so I'm a 'Geordie' girl at heart.  For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to create.  Painting, drawing, sewing and crafts were the substance of my childhood.  I was always waiting for the washing up bottle to create the current Blue Peter make!

After leaving school, I followed a path of 'office' type work and for many years was employed by HMRC.  In 2002, I took a leap of faith and went 'back to school' as a mature student, to finally embrace my love of Art and Design. I studied Textiles to begin with, then later enrolled to study Fine Art.  In 2010 I proudly graduated from Teesside University with a BA(Hons) Degree in Fine Art.

Today, I create art full time.  It is 'my job' and my passion.  My artwork is bold and colourful and I Enjoy the 'happy accidents' which often arise from the use of mixed media.  I enjoy creating monotypes too, which have almost become my signature, but I continually experiment with new techniques and products, keeping my work fresh and vibrant.

My current body of work is a little different to anything I have produced before.  Multi layered backgrounds are created by layering paint, collaging paper, using printing techniques, making raw marks and sometimes including words and phrases.  Often I include tiny fragments of antique maps and vintage retro papers or pages from old childrens books.  All of these are precious reminders to me, of past times. There is an illustrative quality to the characters which is a nod to my all time love of childrens books and an obsession with reading and drawing which surfaced at an early age.

"Moving forward, looking back" is the result of a personal journey, making each piece precious and truly meaningful.
